The Jamaican born Jahnet Angela Mastin, is definitely a shining light amongst our Caribbean Restaurant Entrepreneurs in South Florida . Namely, in Dade and Broward county. Jahnet began as an Entrepreneur in 1989. Really she only brought into fruition a long time desire of opening her own restaurant. A desire that was possibly influenced by the following reason. Jahnet stated "I grew up in the restaurant business, because my mother was an owner of a restaurant in Jamaica". So starting her own restaurant was a dream come true. An aspiration that was filled in the year 1989 when she opened her first location at 1272 NW 119th Street in Miami , Florida in Dade county. Jahnet now enjoying twelve years as a entrepreneur, now has three restaurant. The Miramar location, just North of Rt. 441 and County line road, was established in 1995. The first restaurant at 119th Street is no longer in existence. It has been replaced by the North Miami restaurant, established in 1997. The North Miami restaurant is located in the Winn-Dixie market place plaza at 149th Street and NW 7th Avenue. The third restaurant is located in Pembroke Pines at 12530 Pines Blvd. Pembroke Pines, Florida. It adds seasoning to the already tasteful Pembroke Pines plaza just across from C.B. Smith Park. As a shining light Ms. Mastin is shining now more so than ever. She's been for some time pondering upon the idea of opening a restaurant back home; in the Island nation of Jamaica. The inspirationally hard working business personality was honored on a number of occasions. Or I should say that she was recognized for being the honorable personality that she is. "The Jamaica Awareness Inc.", saluted her as a Caribbean Woman of Excellence in 1993. She was also saluted at the " South Florida most progressive black women only expo". For outstanding contributions in business also being 1993. When asked what does she enjoy most about being an Entrepreneur she responded "What I enjoy most is that I provide for others employment". Also she stated "I'm able to enjoy the freedom to explore my own ideas. One different an interesting fact that no one in the audience would know about Jahnet, was that she's the owner of the restaurant. Just like her employees she participates in assisting her patrons with the necessities of (utensils, napkins, etc.). As well as pacifying their appetites with finely prepared foods. Jahnet was recognized for her fine food in a Sunday December 3rd, 2000 issue of the Miami Herald. An article entitled "Pines can get a taste of Jamaica made to order, at the new Janet's". Aside from being a great,
business person, maintaining three restaurants. The inspirational entrepreneur also is involved in community service as well. She sponsors an event entitled "Children Talent Showcase" which began on Easter Sunday of 1991. It's been held each year since 1991 on April 28th. The most talented youth receive trophies and each participant receives an award for their performance. Jahnet also has aspirations to extend the business to her two children (Jason and Asha), making a true family business. Just as she experienced her mother in the same business in Jamaica . Her children have experienced the same here in Miami with their mother in her restaurant business. Jahnet, having a personality even as tasteful as her Caribbean dishes. Was given the title by a close friend and regular patron of the restaurant, "A fruit of Jamaica ". Which was the title of a poem honoring her on her birthday February 1, 1999 . A tasteful personality is very important being a business person. Patrons of Jahnet restaurant can expect to see new appetizing delights for she is planning to expand her already vast Caribbean menu in the near future. Come dear people to where you could find the best Caribbean dishes. I say unto you Jahnet, "I wish you much success, best wishes always". from you friend, Jahmal Westmoreland - EL |
